Ontario rules, simply
When do you need a safety?
- Buying or selling a used car: in most private sales, the vehicle needs a Safety Standards Certificate before it can be plated in the new owner's name.
- Transferring a vehicle: some transfers between family members don't need one. Check with ServiceOntario.
- A certificate is not a warranty: it shows the vehicle met minimum standards on the inspection day.
