Hybrid technology
How a hybrid is different.
A hybrid has two power sources working together, so problems can come from either side, or from the systems that connect them.
Conventional vehicle
- Gasoline engine powers the wheels
- 12-volt battery for starting and accessories
- Alternator charges the battery
- Friction brakes stop the car
Hybrid vehicle
- Engine and electric motor share the work
- High-voltage battery pack plus a 12-volt battery
- Regenerative braking recharges the battery
- Extra cooling for the battery and inverter
- Computers decide which power source to use

Hybrid warning light on?
Don't ignore it. Many hybrid warnings start small: a weak 12-volt battery, a cooling fan or a sensor. A proper diagnosis finds the cause before it becomes expensive.
